A 25-year-old female in Georgia, was just arrested by the feds for removing classified material from a government facility and sending it to media outlets. Reports indicate that a criminal complaint was filed in Georgia, charging Reality Leigh Winner, a federal contractor from Augusta, Georgia. She was arrested by the FBI on Saturday and appeared in federal court today.
“Exceptional law enforcement efforts allowed us quickly to identify and arrest the defendant,” said Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein. “Releasing classified material without authorization threatens our nation’s security and undermines public faith in government. People who are trusted with classified information and pledge to protect it must be held accountable when they violate that obligation.”
Pluribus International Corporation hired and assigned Winner as a contractor to a U.S. government agency facility based in Georgia. Her first day was February 13th, where she held top secret clearance. It is reported that on May 9, Winner printed and removed classified intelligence reporting containing information from an intelligence community agency. The act of printing and removing is an illegal offense. Within days, Winner had sent the illegally obtained property to The Intercept. The Intercept is an online news outlet.
FBI agents determined during detainment and questioning that Winner was intentionally and illegally reporting classified information. She admitted that she printed the classified intelligence report and sent it to the online news outlet, The Intercept.
